What is Mindfulness?

An overview of the mindfulness programmes I offer

What is  Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is noticing what’s actually happening moment by moment in an open, non-judging way. Mindful awareness is like a mental work out– we train the mind to become fitter and more agile.

As we develop the skill, we can learn how to respond more skilfully to what’s happening now rather than worrying about what has happened in the past or what might happen in the future.

How might you benefit?

We are all unique individuals so the benefits will varyfrom person to person. But we all share a common humanity and face challenges in our lives.

Benefits might include:

·      Stress reduction

·      Feeling less anxious

·      Being kinder and moreaccepting of yourself

·      Improved relationships

·      Better focus

·      Greater wellbeing andenjoyment of life

How can I learn mindfulness?

The best way to learn mindfulnessis to practise it – over and over …. and over! With practice we gradually learnto direct our attention rather than being pushed and pulled around by our thoughts. We begin to realise we have more choice in how we respond to challenges rather than reacting in old familiar ways. One of the best ways to learn is to join a programme where you can practise alongside others.

What I offer

The Mindfulness BasedStress Reduction programme runs over eight weeks and provides a solid trainingin building the mindfulness muscle.

Each session includes guided practices, group discussions and exercises to help cultivate a sense of connection and presence. You will have chance to  practise alongside others either on Zoom orin-person depending on the offering. The course is very practical and aims to be of use in your everyday life. No previous experience is needed – just a willingness to try things out and to practise at home between the sessions.

The course is a mix of educational learning and experiential practice. Topics covered include becoming more present,  stress and how we relate to it, our relationship to thoughts, communication and self-care.

I also run courses based on the book “Finding Peace in a Frantic World” which is similar to the MBSR offering and often used in business settings where sessions and practices mayneed to be of a shorter duration.

What the course includes

·      An orientation session– an important meet-up giving an overview of mindfulness and the course content& chance to ask questions

·      Eight two-hour long sessions

·      A half day silent retreat

·      Weekly hand-outs and home practice logs

·      Weekly recordings to practise at home
